Dave held responsibility for maintenance of various buildings, whilst still being heavily relied upon for his extensive electrical engineering experience.  In the latter years Dave managed all facilities related to Shell's Research and Development centre at Ellesmere Port all the way through to decommissioning and handover to Chester University - again cutting edge science had been a constant theme within Dave's life.  He was awarded a special recognition award in 2005 for his invaluable contribution to electrical Health and Safety. Dave spent many happy years lodging in Chester, enjoying the scenery, bars and restaurants and made many friends with his work colleagues as he had done wherever he had worked.
